Rosie and Tom live in the countryside, and today is shoot day. With their black Labrador at their heels and their flags in hand, they join the beating line, watch the gundogs work, see the pheasants flushed from the woods and sit down to a steaming pheasant pie in the barn. Back at school, Rosie finds it hard to explain her weekend to classmates who have never seen a shoot, until her teacher invites the whole class out to see the woods, the deer, the owls and the hares that a well-kept shoot looks after.

Written by Yorkshire hunter, field to fork and shooting advocate Rachel Carrie and dedicated to the children of the countryside who often feel misunderstood, this gentle, honest story is about respect for people, animals and nature, and pride in caring for the land. It finishes with Rosie and Tom's own pheasant pie recipe for young cooks to make with a grown-up, and a short note on why eating wild game is good for us and for the countryside.
